After a brief three-day pause, the Live in Bulawayo series at the ongoing 50 Dates in the Theatre is set to resume today.
The programme, curated by theatre veteran Saimon Mambazo Phiri as part of his 50th birthday celebrations, began on August 11 and runs until November 1 at the Bulawayo Theatre.
Tonight’s show, starting at 6pm, will feature Sunduza Dance Theatre as they mark their 40th anniversary. They will share the stage with Afro-pop musician Butholezwe and rising singer Macala. Bryce DJ Klasiq will manage the music, while Umuntu Omkhulu takes on hosting duties.
Tomorrow, August 28, audiences can enjoy an eclectic mix of music, poetry, and dance from Bhila, uGagisa, Victory Siyanqoba, Lemoniq, Luchi Shiki, and Sonkomose. DJ Sida will handle the decks with Washie the MC guiding the programme.
On Friday, August 29, the line-up includes Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble, The Apostle: Dumi Mhlanga, Rainbow Blaze Marimba, Kaykid Umfanomsotho, and Kwaito Boys Guluva 7 and Mawiza, with DJ Mzoe on the decks and B-Kay as MC.
Saturday, August 30, will feature La Dee, Noluntu J, Lamas Ellz, and multi-award-winning group Iyasa, with Mufali providing music and Umnikazi Wempuphu hosting.
Lady Tshawe, one of the organisers, said that after week two, the 50 Dates in the Theatre will take a three-week break before returning with classic plays Zwelethu and Zambezi Express.
She added that audiences are gradually embracing the initiative.
“Like everything new, people are initially hesitant, but genuine excitement takes over. We are approaching the main events, and I suspect ticket demand will spike towards the end of the run,” Tshawe said.
She highlighted the value of reviving classic plays for a new generation of performers.
“Working with younger artistes to bring their own spin to these productions has been very encouraging,” she said.
Tshawe also called for sponsors and partners to support the initiative.
“We have already had ticket sponsors, which we used for giveaways for MAD in Afrika. For the upcoming events, we invite those who can help so we can provide tickets to people who want to attend but are on a tight budget,” she said.
