IN a shocking case of jealousy gone wild, a 24-year-old artisanal miner stabbed a 17-year-old boy after accusing him of “selling” off his aunt — the woman he claimed to be in love with!
Bigboy Mathe landed himself in serious trouble when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Patience Madondo facing assault charges.
The court heard that on 25 February at around 8pm, Mathe stormed the teen’s home looking for his aunt.
But when he was told she wasn’t there, things quickly turned ugly!
Prosecutor Josephine Gurazhira told the court that a drunk and angry Mathe became aggressive and demanded to be let into the house.
Then — boom!
He pulled out a knife and stabbed the teenager once in the lower abdomen.
The situation could have turned deadly, but Mpofu’s father rushed in and stopped the miner before he could strike again.
Police later swooped in and arrested Mathe following investigations.
In court, Mathe tried to downplay the horror attack.
“It was a misunderstanding, Your Worship,” he said. “I thought Mpofu had sold his aunt because I’m the one in a relationship with her.”
He claimed he believed the woman had gone off with some men he worked with — a suspicion that pushed him into a violent rage.
Mathe showed little remorse, blaming alcohol for his actions.
“I was drunk. It was a mistake. I ask for forgiveness,” he said.
But the court was not impressed.
“A knife does not solve any problem. Next time, learn to talk and resolve issues properly,” warned magistrate Madondo.
Mathe was slapped with 24 months behind bars, with eight months suspended for five years.
He will effectively serve 16 months in prison.
Meanwhile, the injured teen was rushed to hospital where he received treatment, and a medical report was presented in court.
