ZIMBABWE international Divine Lunga, says the Warriors are determined to end their Africa Cup of Nations group stage curse when the tournament kicks off in Morocco next month.
Haunted by years of early exits, the defender believes this generation has the hunger and tactical edge to finally push beyond the first round.
His optimism comes as the Warriors continue their preparations in Saudi Arabia ahead of tonight’s international friendly against Algeria, a key part of coach Mario Marinica’s build up plan. They will face Qatar four days later.
Zimbabwe have qualified for their sixth Afcon appearance but have never progressed past the group stages. Lunga insists that under Marinica’s new approach, the team is ready to rewrite that story.
“We are assimilating a new system, but as a player, I am always ready and eager to represent my country,” said Lunga. “The workouts have been gruelling, but we understand and appreciate that this is for our ultimate benefit.”
Lunga said the players are adjusting to the tactical demands being introduced by Marinica, and that the coming match against Algeria will test their progress and build confidence.
“Algeria are not just an ordinary side, they are a powerhouse in Africa, which makes them the right candidates for us to implement our tactics,” he said. “If we cause them problems, which we are very capable of, it will work as a confidence booster.
“It might be a friendly match, but it’s all we have for our preparations, so we will give it our best to get a positive result we all want.”
