FC PLATINUM coach Joel Luphahla expects a difficult afternoon when his side travels to face newcomers FC Hunters at Rufaro Stadium in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) Matchday Three encounter this afternoon.
The Zvishavane-based outfit heads into the clash hoping to gather momentum early in the campaign, but Luphahla has warned his charges not to underestimate a Hunters side that has started life in the top flight in impressive fashion.
Hunters have not conceded a goal in their opening two matches, a statistic that has not gone unnoticed by the former Warriors winger, who believes the promoted side’s defensive solidity will present a serious challenge.
“It’s a tough fixture for us because we’re playing away,” said Luphahla.
“For a team to go two matches without conceding shows they are well organised and disciplined. We need to go there with confidence and try to breach their defensive structure.”
Luphahla also acknowledged the quality on the Hunters technical bench, revealing that their coach is someone he holds in high regard and considers a mentor in his football journey.
Former youth international Nesbert Saruchera is the Hunters coach.
However, the Platinum gaffer insists admiration will count for little once the match kicks off, with his focus firmly on ensuring his side produces a confident performance.
“I’m hoping the pitch allows us to play our game. The confidence the players have shown after a difficult start is pleasing and I hope it carries into Wednesday,” he said.
The former national team star also warned against taking the promoted side lightly, noting that Hunters boast experienced players capable of troubling established top-flight teams.
“They may be newcomers but they have seasoned players and a seasoned coach. That makes them a dangerous team,” said Luphahla.
“If we want to be champions, we need to win these away games.”
He added that his players’ determination and hunger for maximum points will be crucial as Platinum seek to assert themselves early in the season.
FC Platinum have one win from their opening two matches having lost 2-1 to Ngezi Platinum before a 2-0 victory over Manica Diamonds at the weekend.
