THE Chillmaster judgment, under the headline ‘Chillmaster Escapes Jail,’ provoked intense debate among our readers, on all our platforms, when we published the story last month.
Here are some of the comments:
THE UNHAPPY BRIGADE
This is not justice. It sets a wrong precedence. You kill someone for driving without a licence and you get a light sentence like that. Saka licence haichasina basa − Economist Dziva

If Chillmaster wasn’t an artist but a normal person they would have taken this a step further. He wouldn’t have just walked away with a community service and a 200 dollar fine. l love Chillmaster a lot as an artist but the law didn’t do justice here. − Kunday Keyz

I was on his side but his sentence seems so light considering someone died, yes, it was an accident but why drive without a licence, anyway life goes on. − Stella Vee

Not just this case, there are many cases like this that we have seen in the past years where you could tell there is some sinister dealings behind the scenes whilst innocent citizens are robbed of justice by those connected or with the financial muscle, remember the case of a Harare student killed by a kombi driver going against the flow of traffic in a one-way and the driver ran away after the accident leaving the innocent girl to die and was later caught in Beitbridge, the list is long − Mtatshelwa Magqina

Denzel Washington said be careful at your highest moment that’s when the devil comes for you. The judge needs to order the magistrate to resentence this guy, other people need to learn from this case. A jail sentence not just community service will send shockwaves. Wishing him good luck, maybe he will combine forces na Chihomuhomu for a collabo − Elvis Murongi

Zvekuti ndi Chillmaster hatina basa nazvo ehe anogona kuimba but mhosva ngaitongwe sezvairi. Horror iya yaakaimba yatanga manje, mudzimu wamurasha, ndizvo chaizvo, kutyaira usina licence imhosva pachayo usiri kuratidza learners driving warnings futi imwe mhosva.
Wotozotsika zvako munhu futi haa culpable homicide penalty inofanirwa kuongororwa iyi, our legislators must look into this law and the judge must also make a landmark ruling − Faniey Dem Tingz

THE HAPPY BRIGADE
Unfortunately, the law is the law, his case has to go for automatic review at the High Court, this is just part of the justice system and if the honourable judge finds that the trial magistrate erred in either conviction or sentencing, then the matter will be sent back for resentencing or re-trial.
There was no gross miscarriage of justice here, the court approached this case with all its knowledge, you will be surprised to hear that the Judge finds no errors on how the matter was handled − Jairosi Mapiki

A lot was considered here, he was remorseful, he worked out something with the bereaving family, he also considered he is young and has potential, why are you all clamouring for potential to be destroyed behind the cells?
You wil never know what this experience taught him in life, his experience might be a launchpad for something good, maybe, in awareness campaigns.
Let’s try to search for the positives which might come out not kushuvira the downfall of everyone simply becoz iwe wagara uri down.
Hats off to the magistrate. Chillmaster hope unoshandisawo your experience for something positive − Kentoz Neraz Chimaz

The guy had an understanding with the family, he took the blame and probably volunteered to help the wife and kids’ school fees etc, my small thought − Pagewell Paige Muswapi

I see some complaining here. I understand the situation is very painful. But consider this − what Chillmaster committed is culpable homicide not murder.
He was negligent in his actions, which is different from murder where the perpetrator needs to have the intention. There is just need for remedial action to the bereaved family − Blessing Chikwenda

Let’s not judge we don’t really know what happened, who was wrong between Chillmaster and the deceased, we don’t know what Chillmaster and the deceased family agreed and we don’t know the proof Chillmaster produced to prove his innocence.
420 hours of community service for culpable homicide and driving without a license? Pane zvaitika chete.
The lady artist Dudu was once jailed for the same offence. Maybe circumstances are different − Peterson Bobby Moyo

The same people here saying Chillmaster was supposed to serve a jail sentence are the same people who could have been consoling him dai anzi aende kujeri, bitter Zimbabweans.
Next driver achaita same mistake this case is going to be used as a reference, anyway that was an accident but torai licence bamunini − Sean Tee
*****
Culpable homicide and murder are two different things. Driving without a licence has its own fine and the culpable homicide charge has its own fine. He agreed to continue fending for this family and sending the kids to school − Munhu WaMwari
