Mahlangu on being ‘belittled’ by his partner

Nkululeko Mahlangu has opened up about his experience on Showmax’s Married at First Sight.

In the latest episode, during dinner Nkululeko said when he joined the experiment he had expectations and felt his wife Makoto Phumodi did not fit his brief because he wanted a humble, God-fearing and strong woman, which he does not feel she is.

Tensions continued to rise after Makoto said he was a different man behind closed doors, while Nkululeko maintained he never gets an opportunity to express himself because his partner dominates.

“I decided to come to the show to find a wife since I wasn’t finding anyone compatible. I believed that as the show had experts and married people, I would be paired with my soul mate,” he said.

“When I first saw my wife, I was happy but curious if she was a humble and God-fearing woman because those two characteristics are important to me.”

Nkululeko said he prepared himself through prayer and fasting.

Viewers of the show, which follows four couples who recently met and married, witnessed Nkululeko’s sexual health being attacked, his career in entertainment questioned and being accused of being a liar by Makoto.

He said he is waiting for the reunion to speak about what transpired.

“Watching my wife embarrass herself, thinking she’s belittling me but ruining her own image. It breaks me to see her destroy herself like this.

“There are things that have transpired, but I’m waiting for the reunion to speak more openly about them. You’ll have to stay tuned to see how it plays out.

Despite this, Nkululeko said he acknowledges the happy moments he shared with his wife.

“There have been many highs. The happy moments I shared with my wife were my favourite.

“I’ve matured and I know which battles to fight. I also learnt silence is power. Not every conversation needs your attention.” − Times
