AS the country marked 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, one Insuza man has stepped forward to show the nation exactly what not to do in a marriage.
A 34-year-old Maraposa, maestro of poor decisions, Mbonisi Mgayo, found himself on the wrong side of the law after turning his wife into a punching bag over a simple cellphone message.
Yes, during a time when everyone is being begged to keep their hands to themselves, Mgayo decided to audition for the World’s Worst Husband Awards.
Mgayo appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Beverly Madzikatire where he was convicted of domestic violence.
Prosecutor Mehluli Ndlovu told the court drama erupted in July 2025 around 5PM when Mgayo handed his wife his phone so she could contact his cousin.
A message from the ex then popped up, and suddenly the cousin call was cancelled in favour of a full blown soapie showdown.
“This triggered a misunderstanding between the couple leading to an argument. During the altercation the accused person assaulted his wife with open hands, fists all over the body and he booted her once on the stomach,” said Ndlovu.
Instead of apologising or at least blaming poor network, Mgayo reportedly doubled down like a man determined to prove he has learned absolutely nothing during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, marked every year.
The following morning the fed up complainant went straight to the police and Mgayo’s freedom took a sharp turn to St Luke’s hospital corridors where her medical report was compiled and later produced in court.
Magistrate Madzikatire showed no mercy. She slapped Mgayo with ten months behind bars. Four months were suspended for five years and six months were suspended on condition he completes 210 hours of community service at Maraposa Primary School.
A fitting lesson for a man who clearly needs homework on how to treat a wife.
