Residents of Nketa were left shaken on Tuesday after the body of a man was discovered floating in the Phekiwe River.

According to Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the body was first spotted by a 37-year-old woman who was walking to her maize field in the early hours. She immediately alerted the police.

“On the 17th of November 2025, a female adult aged 37 years of Nketa, Bulawayo, was going to her maize field when she spotted the body of an unknown male floating on top of water in Phekiwe River. She then made a police report,” Inspector Msebele said.

The deceased, whose identity remains unknown, was wearing a black T-shirt, coffee-coloured track pants, and blue shorts. He had a heart-shaped tattoo on his left arm and short black hair.

Police said the body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post-mortem examination.

Inspector Msebele has appealed to members of the public who may have a missing relative matching the description to come forward.

“We are appealing to the public with a missing relative matching the above description to assist with identification. Anyone with information should contact ZRP Nkulumane on 0292-496756 or visit United Bulawayo Hospital,” she said.

The circumstances surrounding the man’s death are yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing.

Residents have expressed concern over safety along the Phekiwe River, citing previous incidents of accidents in the area. Police have urged the public to exercise caution while near rivers and other water bodies.
