A 26-YEAR-OLD Chipinge man has been sentenced to an effective five months in prison after he destroyed property belonging to a man he accused of having an affair with his wife.
Chamunorwa Evans Makuyana was initially sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment.
However, four months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
A further three months were suspended on condition that he pays the complainant US$240 as restitution for the damaged property.
He will, therefore, serve an effective five-month custodial sentence.
In a statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) Makuyana was convicted by the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court of malicious damage to property following the incident, which occurred on July 4.
Makuyana went to the complainant’s workplace to confront him over allegations that he was involved in an extramarital affair with his wife.
“Emotions quickly escalated after the confrontation, resulting in an argument between the two men.
“During the altercation, Makuyana grabbed the complainant’s Pantum P3500DN single-function laser printer before smashing it onto the floor, causing extensive damage to the device.
“The damaged printer was valued at US$240, which the court ordered Makuyana to repay as part of the conditions attached to the suspended portion of his sentence.
“Following the incident, the complainant reported the matter to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, leading to investigations, Makuyana’s arrest and his subsequent prosecution before the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court,” reads the statement.
