FOR someone who grew up tending goats and cattle in Gutu, becoming a cultural icon in Sweden is a remarkable achievement.
Luckson “Man Luckerz” Chikutu, now a household name in Uppsala, an ancient city near Stockholm, continues to receive recognition for his contributions to culture and the arts.
The artist, who seamlessly blends traditional music, dance, and storytelling, was honoured last weekend for promoting cultural exchange.
He has established himself as a traditional dance teacher and writer, inspiring a new generation of artists.The local community gathered at Jazz Hotel Hellsten in Stockholm to celebrate his efforts in promoting their city and its cultural heritage.
Backed by Zim Traditional Unity, made up of nationals from Mozambique, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Sweden, Man Luckerz has created a unique cultural group that resonates with audiences overseas. In recognition of his mentorship and dedication, the Stockholm community honoured him with gifts and tributes, while some expressed a keen desire to tour Zimbabwe and experience its rich culture first-hand.
“It was a significant moment for someone from a humble background in Masvingo to be honoured here, where they now consider me one of their own.
“I’d like to express my gratitude to my brothers, sisters, and friends for visiting the Jazz Hotel Hellsten in Stockholm.“I’d also like to thank Mr Hellsten, the man I saw dancing to a traditional Zimbabwean song, ‘Akanaka’.
“We appreciate his love and the opportunity he has given us to showcase and promote Zimbabwean culture. We’re very grateful for that,” Man Luckerz said. He added:“We appreciate the fans who came and enjoyed themselves as a family. I am thankful for our supporters, who hold great significance for us! We hope this will continue.
“I believe our customs should be safeguarded and maintained.”
Man Luckerz said he hopes young people will learn about and preserve their traditions for a long time.“As long as there are individuals dedicated to preserving it, our culture will endure forever. Zimbabweans, let’s remain loyal to our culture,” he said.“I believe Zimbabwean music will reach even further if we continue to uphold our traditions.
“Let’s promote our music effectively and teach the youth to become lifelong members of our community.
“There weren’t many Zimbabweans who came, but those who did said they had fun. Most of the audience were Swedish, though there were also guests from other countries.”
