Police in Bulawayo are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 40-year-old man from Pumula South was shot and seriously injured while confronting a suspected burglar in the early hours of Tuesday.

In a statement, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said the incident occurred at around midnight on April 1. The victim had reportedly gone outside his house to relieve himself when he noticed an unknown suspect attempting to break into a cabin used as a vending stall near his residence.

Inspector Msebele said the man confronted the suspect, who then allegedly produced a firearm and shot him in the stomach before fleeing from the scene.

“The victim’s wife, aged 39, heard him calling for help shortly after he had gone outside. Upon checking, she discovered him lying on the ground bleeding from the stomach. He informed her that he had been shot after confronting an unknown person who was attempting to break into a vending cabin,” she said.

A police report was made at around 1.30am and the victim was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

Police have since appealed to members of the public with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to come forward or contact ZRP Pumula.
