Man stabs wife over money for food

A 31-YEAR-OLD man from Bulawayo has appeared in court for allegedly stabbing his wife with a knife following a domestic dispute.

Thomas Svoswe, of Hyde Park, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince  Ncube, facing a charge of physical abuse. He was remanded in custody to Friday, pending the submission of the complainant’s medical report.

Prosecuting, Ms Cathrine Kuzu told the court that the incident occurred on October 26 at around 3PM. The court heard that Svoswe and his wife, Ms Vimbai Gandani (25), were at their Hyde Park home when an argument over money for food escalated.

“Svoswe had a misunderstanding with the complainant over money to buy food. The dispute degenerated into a fight during which the accused took a knife and stabbed his wife once on the forehead,” said Ms Kuzu.

Ms Gandani was rushed to hospital for medical attention, and a police report was subsequently made leading to Svoswe’s arrest.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, a 69-year-old man from Nkayi has appeared in court for allegedly raping a mentally ill woman from his village. Den Nkomo, of Matshuzula Village under Chief Nkalakatha, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mr Archie Wochiunga, facing a charge of rape. He was remanded in custody to November 4 for trial.

Prosecuting, Mr Owen Mugari told the court that the incident occurred on July 10 at around 2PM, when the complainant was alone at home.

“The accused person forcibly grabbed the complainant by the waist from behind and went on to pull up her dress before raping her,” said Mr Mugari.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Nkomo’s arrest. The complainant was referred to Nkayi District Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
