BIG centre-back Lawrence Mhlanga and utility player Kudakwashe Mahachi are training with Highlanders as they seek to secure deals ahead of the new season.

Both players turned out for Manica Diamonds last season and their presence is expected to add much-needed depth and experience to a Highlanders side undergoing a rebuilding exercise.

Mhlanga is an imposing defender with continental experience, having previously played for FC Platinum, while Mahachi is a left-footed attacker who can operate on the wing and also slot in at left-back when required.

The former Warriors star had limited appearances during his two-year stint at Manica Diamonds.

A source who observed training at Ascot Stadium on Thursday said the two fitted in well with the rest of the squad.

“I have seen a number of new faces, but the most notable ones are Lawrence ‘Des Walker’ Mhlanga and Kuda Mahachi. They seemed to cope well with physical trainer Majaha Ndlovu’s high-intensity exercises. The mood looks very positive ahead of the start of the season in the first weekend of March. Something positive appears to be brewing at Bosso. I liked what I saw,” said the source.

Highlanders are rebuilding following the departure of several key players last season, amid uncertainty over who will take charge of the team.

The club has struggled with a lack of quality and depth over the past three seasons, a situation that has worsened with each passing year.

Two coaches have emerged as front-runners for the job — Benjani Mwaruwari and South African Thabo Senong.

Senong left for South Africa a fortnight ago to await his visa, while Mwaruwari’s potential engagement is reportedly linked to sponsorship prospects that could help the club attract quality players needed to compete at the top level.
