CONSTRUCTION of the Mabvuku and Msasa Interchange in Harare is progressing well as the Government intensifies efforts to rehabilitate major roads in and around the city.
Government officials and engineers have recently been inspecting several roads across the capital to assess their condition.
Among these is the newly-rehabilitated Mama Mafuyana Drive (formerly Lorraine Drive), which is set to reopen to traffic soon, marking another milestone in Harare’s ongoing road modernisation programme.
The near-completion of this key thoroughfare comes as authorities accelerate assessments of other roads requiring urgent rehabilitation. The section of Harare Drive stretching between Willowvale Road and Simon Mazorodze Road has already been opened to traffic.
In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the progress made so far on the two major interchanges.
“Sub-structure works are now actively underway at the Mabvuku Interchange Construction Project, marking significant progress in the delivery of this transformative transport infrastructure,” the ministry said. “This foundational stage is critical in supporting the interchange’s superstructure and ensuring long-term durability, safety, and efficiency for road users. The project continues to move steadily forward as we commit to modernising and expanding our national road network.”
At the Msasa Interchange, construction of a detour is currently in progress.
“This critical phase will facilitate the smooth diversion of traffic while paving the way for accelerated works on the main interchange infrastructure. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we modernise and transform our road network.”
Preparatory works have also commenced for two additional interchanges at the junctions of Simon Mazorodze and Willowvale roads, as well as Simon Mazorodze Road and Remembrance Drive.
These are part of a broader pipeline of four more such structures aimed at easing congestion, reducing road accidents and modernising the country’s infrastructure.
Other planned interchanges include locations at the Mabvuku junction; Harare Drive-Mutare Road; Harare Drive-Liberation Legacy Way; Nemakonde Way-Harare Drive; Sam Nujoma-Harare Drive; Westgate Traffic Circle; Kuwadzana Traffic Circle; and Churchill-Liberation Legacy Way.
