ZIMBABWE amateur golfers Miriam Masiya and Munesu Chimhini were crowned ANOCA Youth Olympic Games champions in Luanda, Angola over the weekend.
Masiya of Royal Harare continued with her fine form after she recently won the Maswede Open back home.
The ANOCA ran from December 10-14 and the two represented Zimbabwe, doing well to come out top by 17 shots.
Masiya said she is delighted with the outcome.
“I am happy to have won one of the biggest tournaments in the continent and I look forward to more challenging events,” said Masiya. “There was a lot of competition but I managed to win with 17 clear shots. The course played really well throughout the three rounds and I am grateful to my coach and the Zimbabwe Golf Association for affording us the opportunity. I am gaining more experience playing at regional and international tournaments.”
To take the lead, Masiya had rounds of 71, 72 and 71 for a total of two-under-214.
In the boys’ section, Chimhini finished one-under with rounds of 72, 74 and 69 and was ahead of Sam Nel of Namibia. Kingsley Afful of Ghana was third as Kenyan Tsevi Soni was fourth.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean professional golfers Ben Follet-Smith, Kieran Vincent and Stuart Krog once again managed to make the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Golf Championship at Royal Johannesburg East Golf Club in South Africa over the weekend.
