FANS were left in the dark after Matheus Cunha pulled out of a Christmas lights switch-on following a mystery accident.
The Manchester United forward, 26, was due to turn on the festive feature in Altrincham on Saturday afternoon.
Sam Aston – Chesney in Coronation Street – looked set to complete the bizarre link-up, with Santa Claus also set to make a premature appearance in November, too. Aston, whose character supporters United, got the call-up after winning Dancing On Ice.
However, an Instagram update on Saturday afternoon revealed the £62.5million Brazilian footballer would not be able to fulfil his duties for the local community after an incident earlier in the day. Visit Altrincham shared a snap of Cunha celebrating for the Red Devils and wrote: “Unfortunately, Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons.
“There’s lots of exciting performances to come including Luzahnn of Livin’ Joy and Sam Aston, winner of Dancing on Ice 2025, who is Chesney in Coronation Street, will be switching on the lights!”
And that prompted a wave of responses from football fans on social media. As well as the bafflement over the odd Christmas lights update, some were concerned over Cunha’s fitness for Monday night’s clash at home to Everton. -Sun.
One said: “The strangest Instagram post I’ve ever seen.”
SunSport understands Cunha did suffer a minor knock but is not expected to miss the Toffees game.
Cunha has played well but struggled to find his goalscoring form for United since his big-money move from Wolves in the summer.
His only goal in 15 goals for club and country came with a neat finish in the 4-2 victory over Brighton at the end of October.
Cunha is living in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s old house in Hale with his wife Gabriela and their two young children.
But while he has taken Ibrahimovic’s old No10 shirt, he exclusively told SunSport that he hopes to emulate Eric Cantona’s Old Trafford legacy one day -Sun.
