A 26-year-old man from Chirumanzu was yesterday sentenced to five years in prison after brutally stabbing his neighbour, ripping open his stomach and leaving his intestines exposed.
Simon Tawanda Magede of Rangwa Village was convicted of attempted murder by Bulawayo regional magistrate, Mr Mark Dzira. However, he will serve an effective three years after the magistrate suspended two years for five years, on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
Prosecuting, Mr Jethro Mada told the court that on July 24 at around 4AM, the complainant was asleep in his zinc-sheet cabin when he was awakened by the sound of stones being thrown onto the roof.
He went outside to investigate and found Magede pelting the house with stones. Upon confronting him, a violent scuffle ensued during which Magede drew a knife and stabbed the complainant multiple times.
The victim sustained three cuts to the buttocks, five deep wounds to the right leg, and a severe stab wound to the abdomen that left his intestines protruding.
Magede fled the scene, leaving the complainant bleeding profusely. Family members rushed to his aid and he was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital, where he remains admitted.
A police report was filed and investigations led to Magede’s arrest.
