THE Zimbabwe senior women’s national football team return to action with an opening Group B clash against the Eswatini women’s national football team at 12:00 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Thursday.
The tournament which is being hosted in Polokwane, South Africa, presents the Mighty Warriors with a chance to reassert themselves regionally after missing recent major continental competitions.
The side is in Group B alongside Eswatini, Zambia and Botswana.
Zimbabwe have historically dominated this fixture, having won three times in their six meetings, drawing twice and losing only once. The side’s preparations have been less than ideal as the players are coming off the off season.
Group winners and the best runner-up will progress to the semi-finals. With only three teams in Group C, results against the bottom sides in Groups A and B will not count in the best runner-up calculation.
A win against Eswatini would significantly strengthen Zimbabwe’s hopes and build momentum ahead of tougher assignments against early favourites Zambia.
