THE Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has mourned the untimely death of Montrose Girls High School headmistress, Mrs Sekai Chikavanga, who died in a road traffic accident in Bulawayo on Saturday.
In a message of condolence, the Ministry described Mrs Chikavanga as an exceptional leader, dedicated educationist and champion of quality education.
“It is with profound shock and deep sorrow that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has learnt of the untimely passing of Mrs Sekai Chikavanga, the head of Montrose High School.
“On behalf of the honourable Minister Torerayi Moyo, the Deputy Minister, Angeline Gata, the Permanent Secretary, Mr Moses Mhike, heartfelt condolences to the Chikavanga family, staff and learners of Montrose High School, the Bulawayo Province and the broader education fraternity,” said the Ministry in a statement yesterday.
It said Mrs Chikavanga was an energetic administrator who led with passion, commitment and a deep sense of service.
“The ministry will fondly remember her invaluable role and vibrant participation in the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Exhibition, where she consistently showcased the ministry’s work with creativity, professionalism and pride.
“Her energy, organisational skills and national platform were truly outstanding and an inspiration to many. We have lost a gallant leader whose contribution to quality education will remain etched in our memory forever,” said the ministry.
The fatal accident occurred at about 7pm at the intersection of Masotsha Ndlovu Avenue and Old Victoria Falls Road near Amakhosi Filling Station.
Police confirmed that two passengers died on the spot after the Toyota vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a DAF CF truck.
The Toyota was being driven by Stephen Mafuwa (63), of Killarney, who was travelling west along Masotsha Ndlovu Avenue with two passengers on board.
Police said Mafuwa allegedly turned right in front of oncoming traffic before the Toyota was struck by the DAF truck, which was travelling east along the same road.
Mrs Chikavanga and another passenger, Ms Spiwe Mudhimba, died on the spot, according to police.
