MOTORIST, WHO FLED FROM TWO ACCIDENT SCENES WHERE TWO PEOPLE DIED, NABBED

A MOTORIST, suspected of having fled from two accident scenes, where two people died on both occasions, has been arrested.

According to the police, Zivai Jembere was captured on video speeding away from an accident scene on May 3, at around 0130 hours.

The accident happened at the corner of Simon Vengai Muzenda Road and Samora Machel Avenue in Harare.

Police said Jembere was driving a Honda Fit, registration number ADJ 1907.

The other driver, Frankson Simbarashe Mudzingwa, was driving a black Honda Fit, registration number AHC 9230.

Investigations showed that Jembere’s vehicle collided with Mudzingwa’s car, causing it to overturn several times before landing back on its wheels.

Police said Jembere did not stop at the scene.

A passenger in Mudzingwa’s vehicle, Andrew Tawanda Mbaya, died from his injuries.Police said Mbaya succumbed to the injuries eight days after the accident.

He was being treated at Parirenyatwa Hospital.After Jembere’s arrest, police claim he was also involved in another road traffic accident in Murehwa, in January this year, where a victim also died.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest.“Police arrested a motorist who was involved in a road traffic accidents and failed to stop. “We continue to urge motorists to stop when involved in a road traffic accident,” said Insp Chakanza.

He said police were reiterating public warnings following comments made by Harare provincial police commander, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, that mushikashika drivers would be required to account for every dent on their vehicles, particularly those that are impounded.

“A number of mushikashika drivers have been failing to stop when involved in road traffic accidents, and we continue to warn such drivers to obey road rules and regulations,” said Insp Chakanza.

In another case, police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred on May 18, this year, at the 148-kilometre peg along the Harare–Mutare Road.

Police said a 21-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while he was trying to cross the road. The victim sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.
