ZIMBABWE is set to experience very hot weather conditions over the next three days, with the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) warning the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, dehydration and stress on livestock and crops.

In an advisory issued in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection, the MSD said the hot conditions were expected to prevail countrywide from Sunday to Tuesday, with temperatures likely to rise significantly during the afternoon.

The department attributed the conditions to increased daytime temperatures and reduced cloud cover, which are expected to result in more sunshine hours.
“Very hot weather conditions are expected to prevail across much of the country under sunny skies,” the advisory reads.

The MSD said low-lying areas, particularly the Zambezi and Save valleys, were likely to experience significant temperature increases.

Members of the public have been urged to remain hydrated by drinking adequate amounts of water, wear light clothing and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest part of the day.

The department also advised people to use umbrellas or seek shade when outdoors and, where possible, remain indoors during periods of intense heat.

Children, the elderly and outdoor workers were identified as particularly vulnerable to the effects of high temperatures and should be given special attention.

The hot conditions could also affect agriculture, with increased evaporation and transpiration potentially causing heat stress in plants.

Farmers have been advised to provide adequate water for livestock and pets, while crops should be irrigated when heat stress is observed or as recommended by local agricultural extension officers.
The advisory warned that livestock and pets could also suffer heat stress, making access to sufficient drinking water and suitable shade important during the period.

The MSD said members of the public should continue monitoring its official communication platforms for daily updates and follow precautionary measures recommended by the Department of Civil Protection.
