CHIMURENGA music guru Thomas Mapfumo is set to bid farewell to his fans in South Africa when he holds his ‘final’ show in Mzansi here on Saturday.
Promoters have chosen the Newtown Music Factory (Bassline) in Johannesburg, as the venue for the farewell concert.
Mukanya, as he is affectionately known by his legion of fans, has been in the music business for over five decades.
He has held farewell shows in United Kingdom and plans are also afoot for a closing show in Zimbabwe.
His music was a powerful voice leading during Zimbabwe’s quest for Independence which was achieved in 1980.
It was, therefore, fitting that he was on the line-up at Rufaro Stadium at the gig where the country celebrated its Independence.
He played alongside the late reggae legend Bob Marley.
Age has naturally caught up with the veteran singer who has been reducing his performances. For a man, who turned 80 in July, it is only fitting that he takes a break and reflect on the long musical journey that he has travelled.
This weekend’s show is a collaboration between Mapfumo’s Chimurenga Music Company, fronted by Sam Mataure and UK-based Joab Mugugu with locally-based CC Promotions providing logistical support.
“This is one show Mukanya’s fans have been looking forward to and it is fitting that it comes just as the festive season begins.
“All the logistics are in place and fans should just come and have a good time as they bid farewell to one of the greatest Zimbabwean music ambassadors,” said Chiedza Chizororo of CC Promotions.
Mukanya will be supported by his Blacks Unlimited band as well as Kurai Makore, the man he has anointed as the heir to his Chimurenga throne.
Hip-hop artist Holy Ten has also been added to the list of entertainers.
Local DJs Mr Gee Warrior, DJ Inno B, Tyler and Gunpowder will take turns on the turntables.
MC Rico Myers will be the MC on the night.
Mukanya lands in Jozi tonight.
