MDC-T councillor Luckson Mukunguma who lost the Harare’s mayoral position to Cllr Jacob Mafume last month was yesterday elected the deputy mayor.
Cllr Mukunguma was elected unopposed during a special council meeting held at Town House after Cllr Martin Matinyanya, who had nominated himself, failed to get a seconder.
Clr Mukunguma took the oath of office to replace Cllr Enock Mupamawonde, who was recalled by the MDC-T party from council recently.
In his acceptance speech, Cllr Mukunguma thanked his fellow councillors for the trust they bestowed on him to be the deputy mayor.
“I would like also to extend this appreciation to his worship the mayor that we will travel this journey together. We need to make sure that service delivery is our chorus so that those people who entrusted us with their votes are given the service they are expecting,” he said.
Cllr Mukunguma also pledged to fight corruption. “It is also important as a city of Harare to find our number one enemy which is corruption. All what has been taking place and going on has to come to an end. We must make sure all issues are dealt with professionally so that we will be a recognised council that will leave a legacy for generations to come.”
Cllr Mukunguma said the council also needed to engage the national Government so that issues like the water crisis are resolved.
“We will not be able to solve those things alone as a council. Let’s engage. It’s very important. The only totem that we are supposed to be talking about is that we are all Zimbabweans regardless of our political affiliation,” he said.
“It’s very important to be focused. It’s very important to stick to the national agenda. Who are we? Where do we want to go? What is it that we are supposed to be doing? What responsibility and duties that we are entrusted to do then we must execute those duties.”
