A WOMAN and her two young children were part of survivors of a deadly head-on collision, involving a Toyota Probox and a kombi, which killed six people in Chinhoyi yesterday.
The accident happened near the Chinhoyi Provincial Heroes Acre along the Harare-Chirundu Highway yesterday.
Several other passengers were injured and rushed to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for treatment.
According to police sources, the Toyota Probox, suspected to have been operating illegally as a pirate taxi, collided head-on with a kombi on its way to Harare from Magunje.
Sources said the Probox had failed to comply with a police order to stop when the fatal crash occurred.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, said he could not immediately confirm details of the accident.
He then referred inquiries to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who could not be reached.
However, in a post on its X handle, the police said:
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred this (yesterday) afternoon on 17/07/2026, at the 110 kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road near (the Provincial) Heroes Acre, in which six people were killed.
“The number of injured victims is still to be established. More details to released in due course.”
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured continued to receive medical treatment.
Police are expected to release a comprehensive statement once investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have been completed.
