A Harare City council clearing officer allegedly lost US$9,000 from a wall-mounted safe at the office to thieves.
Tendai Muzando told police that he placed the money in a wall-mounted safe housed in the cashier’s cubicle on Tuesday. He claims the place was properly secured.
He said he first locked the screen door and also the door of the cashier’s cubicle. He then locked the main entrance door and the screen door of the office where the cubicle is located.
On Wednesday at around 0700 hours, Rufaro Jonge (50), a municipal police officer on guard, reportedly discovered that the office had been broken into during routine checks.
Police believe the suspect may have cut padlocks on both screen doors, forced open the main entrance and cubicle doors, and gained access to the safe. Investigators also suspect the thief may have tampered with the safe’s locking system before stealing the money and escaping.
Harare Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case.
“Police are investigating an unlawful entry and theft case at a building in Harare. The office is housed on the 6th floor and the value stolen is US$9,000,” said Insp Chakanza.
