EXACTLY 20 years ago, when he was still an amateur boxer, Charles Manyuchi won a gold medal during the National Youths Games held in Mutare.
He returned to the city on Wednesday as a professional boxing promoter who has partnered the local council in a bid to expand boxing in the Eastern Highlands.
In collaboration with Mutare City, the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy will host an international boxing tournament at Mutare Sports Club on May 23.
Dubbed “Pride of Mutare” the tournament was launched at Mutare City Council offices on Wednesday.
Boxers from Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe will take part.
Some of the local pugilists on the bout card include former World Boxing Federation welterweight champion Evans Husaihwevhu, Lawrence Chiyangwa, Jeremiah “Jingo” Mhere and John Andrew.
“I am proud to be back in Mutare promoting the growth of boxing in a place I also perfected my art,” said Manyuchi.
“Above all, I am Zimbabwean and I feel at home whether I am in Bulawayo, Chivhu or Mutare.”
The former World Boxing Council Silver welterweight champion is on a semi retirement and has taken it upon himself to promote upcoming boxing talent.
He has promoted fights in Harare, Masvingo and Chivhu.
It’s now Mutare’s turn.
“We are proud to announce that this year’s tournament will feature 17 exciting bouts, bringing together some of the finest boxing talent from across the region.
“We will be hosting boxers from Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania, making this a truly international spectacle,” said Nicola Chiunya, Marketing and Media manager for the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy.
“This event is more than just a boxing tournament — it is a celebration of talent, discipline, and the power of sport to unite nations.
“Mutare is ready!
“Historically, Manicaland has produced boxing stars including the likes of Snake Mandeya who hailed from Honde Valley.
“So, this tournament is a major step in developing boxing not only in our city but across Zimbabwe and the region.
“It creates a platform for young boxers to showcase their skills, gain international exposure, and pursue their dreams.
“As the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, our vision has always been to uplift boxing, empower youth, and create opportunities.
“We are grateful to Mutare City Council for their partnership and support in making this event possible.
“Their commitment to sports development is helping position Mutare as a key destination for international sporting events,” said Chiunya.
Mutare City Town Clerk, Blessing Chafesuka, pledged more support from sport development.
“Boxing is one of the most lucrative sports in the world.
“Boxers are some of the highest earners in sport.
“The Mayweathers and Manny Pacquiaos earned millions of dollars in a matter of minutes,” said Chafesuka.
“So we need to promote the youths,” he added.
