A six-year-old girl died after she was trapped in the rubble of one of over 20 houses that were ravaged by a rampaging hailstorm in Mwenezi on Tuesday night.

Filter Makaza who was an ECD B pupil at Mwenezi Primary School died after a hut she was sleeping in with relatives collapsed under the weight of the hailstorm that has jolted the local Civil Protection Committee into action.

The hailstorm left a trail of destruction in the Rinnet Resettlement area near Rutenga where most houses including Mwenezi Clinic were left without roofs.

Mwenezi Rural District Council chief executive Mr Albert Chivanga confirmed the incident.

Mr Chivanga said many houses at the Mwenezi District Development Coordinator’s Camp at Mwenezi Centre and the local clinic had roofs blown off.

The situation has left many families homeless.

The Mwenezi CPU was on the ground assessing the magnitude of damage and looking at ways of easing the plight of the affected families.

Heavy rains have been pounding most parts of Masvingo since the beginning of this week with most areas receiving heavy downpours that precipitated flooding while leaving a trail of destruction in others.
