WARRIORS captain Marvelous Nakamba says playing for the national team is much easier when all stakeholders are behind them.
Nakamba produced a master class as he showed leadership in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 win over Qatar on Monday evening.
The Luton man, who has been struggling for fitness since the beginning of the season, could just have announced his return, if his performance was anything to go by.
His ability to break down opponents’ attack, the short passes and instructions to the younger players summarised his night.
In the end, World Cup bound Qatar could not stand the heat – with goals of Denmark-based Munashe Garananga and Belgium-based Bill Antonio sealing victory.
“We are profoundly grateful to every Zimbabwean, from those at home to our diaspora across the globe and the incredible crowds in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Your support is indispensable; without it, we feel incomplete,” said Nakamba.
Nakamba assumed the captaincy in November 2023 under coach Baltemar Brito, inheriting a squad freshly reinstated to international competition.
Zimbabwe had served an 18-month suspension from FIFA, a ban that lasted throughout much of 2022 and into 2023.
His appointment marked a new era, succeeding Knowledge Musona.
Now, the leadership role is shared with Marshall Munetsi and Teenage Hadebe.
Although challenges faced during his time, coupled by his own challenges at club, the former Aston Villa man is determined to push the Warriors to the limit.
“The victory against Qatar has injected a surge of confidence and renewed zeal into the squad, providing vital momentum just weeks before the prestigious AFCON tournament,” he said.
“As players, we leave everything on the pitch. We are convinced that with the nation’s support and all of us pulling in one direction, we will achieve our objectives. This is the moment we need that solidarity most.
“We must acknowledge the ZIFA leadership, under President Nqobile Magwizi, for organising these critical international friendlies. This level of preparation is exactly what we need.”
Under new coach Marian “Mario” Marinica, Nakamba is confident they can still make a huge impact.
Monday’s win came after 13 months of a winless period.
Nakamba said apart from the support from ZIFA and the fans, government was also supporting them in a big way.
“We were also encouraged by the visit from the Minister of Tourism, Honourable Barbara Rwodzi, who traveled to Saudi Arabia to be with the team, despite our disappointing 3-1 loss to Algeria,” he said.
“To the corporate world and all football stakeholders: your partnership is not just welcome, it is essential. We dearly need you to chip in and support our efforts as we represent the nation.”
Nakamba was able to share the pitch with youngster Prosper Padera who was discovered at U-17 tournament hosted by his foundation.
Padera, who is a Majesa product, is now based in Finland and turning out for SJK Seinajoki.
“I am happy for him, the progress he has made and the determination that runs through his blood. It’s good for him to share the dressing room with the big boys. It was an honour to be on the same pitch fighting for the same purpose in national colours,” said Nakamba.
