NBSZ MAKING PROGRESS TO SECURE ADEQUATE BLOOD SUPPLIES

THE National Blood Services Zimbabwe (NBSZ) says the country is making steady progress towards securing adequate blood supplies ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

It’s a period traditionally marked by increased demand for blood.

NBSZ CEO, Lucy Marowa, said the current national blood stocks are hovering at about three-and-a-half days, indicating positive movement towards the target.

“In terms of the actual number of units available, we are currently sitting on about 1 500 units of blood, including both tested and untested products,” said Marowa.

However, she urged members of the public to continue donating blood, warning that demand usually increases due to road traffic accidents and medical emergencies during the holidays.

“As part of its festive season campaign, NBSZ has partnered with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe to jointly promote road safety and blood donation awareness,” she said

Marowa said the campaign encourages motorists to drive responsibly, avoid texting while driving and recognise their role in saving lives.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to save lives twice first by protecting your own life on the road, and secondly by donating blood to save the lives of others,” she said.
