THE Glenview 8 Traders Market is engaging Geo Pomona Waste Management with a view to improve industrial waste disposal and end recurrent fires mostly caused by burning saw dust at the busy complex.

Chairman of the Glenview 8 traders, Mr Tawanda Utete, said the partnership was designed to create a safer and cleaner trading environment by ensuring regular waste collection.

“We have ongoing arrangements with Geo Pomona. As part of the arrangement, waste will be collected weekly so that we work in a cleaner environment free of rubbish,” he said.

The market, which is home to thousands of traders and furniture manufacturers, has long battled frequent fire outbreaks.

Authorities have attributed the blazes to a combination of accumulated rubbish, sawdust piles and unsafe electricity connections.

Mr Utete noted that most of the waste generated at the market came from sawdust, but traders also produce significant amounts of urban waste.

The market has been receiving additional support from Chenesa Harare, a local clean-up campaign.

“Most of our waste is sawdust, but we also have urban waste and we have been getting assistance from the Chenesa Harare initiative,” said Mr Utete.

The partnership is expected to reduce fire risks, improve hygiene and ease congestion at the market, which is a key hub for furniture and informal trade in Harare.
