THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a nationwide security and traffic enforcement blitz targeting major roads, residential areas and public spaces ahead of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, amid growing concerns over rising road carnage and criminal activity during public holidays.
With an anticipated increase in both human and vehicular transport, police have since been deployed to enforce road traffic laws and maintain public order.
In a statement on Friday, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation is aimed at ensuring the safety of travellers while clamping down on lawlessness.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has deployed adequate manpower on the roads to ensure the public travels safely as the country commemorates the 45th anniversary of Heroes and Defence Forces holidays,” reads the statement.
“Decisive action will be taken against motorists who flout road rules and regulations.”
He said police will impound all unroadworthy vehicles, unregistered or plate-less cars, pirate taxis (mushika-shika) and buses operating without permits.
Drivers found behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol will be arrested on the spot, he added.
He also warned public service vehicle operators against overloading and employing touts, some of whom have been linked to criminal activities, harassment and intimidation of passengers.
