THE Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training has opened a new Vocational Training Centre in Beitbridge to equip young people with practical skills that can improve their employment prospects and livelihoods.
Acting district head for the ministry, Mr Stanley Moyo, announced the development yesterday during the swearing-in ceremony of a new councillor for Ward 14 under the Beitbridge Rural District Council.
Mr Moyo said the Beitbridge RDC had already allocated land for the construction of the centre and that enrolment for the first intake was now underway.
He said while preparations for the construction of permanent structures are ongoing, the VTC will initially offer three-month short courses. For now, classes will be conducted at the ministry’s district offices.
Until this development, Beitbridge District relied largely on the Roman Catholic-run VTC at Lutumba Growth Point.
The VTC principal, Ms Anna Chiriseri, said the centre would begin by offering short courses in catering, solar installation, motor mechanics, electrical power engineering, cosmetology, plumbing and building.
“From our research, indications are that we should start with short courses on catering, solar installation, motor mechanics, electrical power engineering, cosmetology, plumbing and building,” she said.
“We are also going to be having outreach training in areas far from the town so that we impart the knowledge to everyone who is interested around the district.
