THERE was a time when knowing how to use a computer was considered a specialist skill.
Only certain professionals needed it.
Then, gradually, it became expected in offices, then in schools, then everywhere.
Today, someone who cannot use a computer is at a serious disadvantage in almost every area of modern life.
The world did not announce this shift; it simply happened, and those who were not prepared paid the price.
The same shift is now beginning with artificial intelligence (AI).
However, this time the pace is far faster.
AI literacy
The ability to understand, work with and think critically about AI systems is on its way to becoming as fundamental as computer literacy once was.
The question for Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa is not whether this will happen.
The question is whether we will be ready when it does.
To understand what AI literacy means, it helps to first understand what it is not.
It does not mean that every person must become an AI engineer or machine learning specialist.
Computer literacy never required everyone to become a programmer; it simply meant understanding how computers work at a basic level, being able to use them effectively and making informed decisions about when to use them.
AI literacy follows the same logic.
It means understanding what AI systems are, how they make decisions, where they are being used, what their limitations are and how to work alongside them productively.
It also means having the critical thinking skills to question AI outputs rather than accepting them blindly.
This matters because AI is no longer confined to research laboratories.
It is already embedded in the tools and platforms that ordinary people use every day. When a bank flags a transaction as suspicious, when a job application is screened before a human ever reads it or when a government system determines who qualifies for a service, AI is often involved.
People who do not understand this are not simply uninformed.
They are vulnerable.
They cannot challenge decisions that affect their lives or take advantage of AI tools that could genuinely help them.
In this sense, AI illiteracy is quickly becoming a form of digital exclusion.
The workplace is one of the most immediate areas where this is already playing out. Across industries, from banking, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing and public administration, organisations are using AI tools to improve efficiency, analyse data and support decision-making.
Employees who understand how these tools work and when to question their outputs will have a clear advantage over those who do not.
This is not a distant future scenario.
It is happening now and the gap between AI-literate and AI-illiterate workers is likely to widen quickly as adoption accelerates.
For Zimbabwe, this workplace reality is particularly important.
The country’s economy depends on sectors where AI is already making inroads — agriculture, mining, financial services, healthcare and education.
Zimbabwean professionals who can work confidently alongside AI tools will be better positioned to compete both locally and internationally.
This is not about replacing people with machines; it is about ensuring that Zimbabweans remain capable, confident and competitive participants in an economy that is changing rapidly around them.
Education systems carry one of the most significant responsibilities in this transition. Just as computer literacy was eventually incorporated into school curricula across the world, AI literacy must now follow the same path.
This does not mean that every student needs to learn how to build AI systems from scratch.
It means teaching young people what AI is, how it works at a conceptual level, what its limitations and risks are and how to think critically about the decisions it makes. Schools and universities in Zimbabwe have an opportunity to lead this transition rather than simply respond to it after the fact.
Critical thinking is at the heart of genuine AI literacy.
AI systems are powerful but not infallible —- they can be biased, they can be wrong and they can be used irresponsibly.
An AI-literate person is not someone who simply knows how to use AI tools.
They are someone who knows when to trust an AI output and when to question it.
They are also someone who understand that AI reflects the data and values of those who build it, as well as advocate for themselves when AI systems produce unfair or inaccurate results.
These are not technical skills; they are critical life skills for the digital age.
There are also important questions of sovereignty and self-determination at stake.
Most of the world’s most powerful AI systems are built and controlled by organisations based in a small number of countries.
If Zimbabweans and other Africans are not AI-literate, they become passive consumers of systems they did not shape and cannot challenge.
Building widespread AI literacy is not only about economic competitiveness; it is about ensuring that African communities have genuine agency in a world increasingly shaped by intelligent systems.
The shift from computer illiteracy to computer literacy took decades.
Zimbabwe does not have decades to make the same transition with AI.
The technology is moving too quickly and the consequences of being left behind are too significant.
Investing in AI literacy in schools, workplaces and communities is not a luxury.
It is one of the most important investments Zimbabwe can make in its own future.
