NEW: Will AI make search engines obsolete?

FOR more than two decades, searching the internet has followed a familiar pattern.

You type a question into a search engine, thousands of webpages are indexed and ranked, you open several links, compare what you find and decide which information is worth trusting.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to change this pattern in ways that could make it feel outdated.

Instead of receiving a list of links, users can now ask AI systems questions and receive direct, conversational answers.

AI can now summarise information, explain complicated subjects, compare options and adapt responses to a specific question.

This raises a fascinating question: if AI can answer our questions directly, do we still need traditional search engines?

The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.

Traditional search engines are primarily designed to help users discover information across the web.

A user enters keywords and the search engine returns webpages ranked by relevance.

The user then decides which sources to open and which information to trust.

This model has been enormously successful because the internet contains a vast amount of information, and search engines act as its gateway.

AI introduces a fundamentally different approach.

Instead of pointing users towards information, AI systems attempt to understand the question and construct an answer directly.

Rather than receiving a page of links, a user receives a structured explanation and can continue the conversation, naturally changing the relationship between users and the internet in a way that search engines never did.

AI can make information discovery more convenient.

Users can ask questions naturally without needing to construct effective search queries, and AI can summarise information, explain technical concepts, compare options and adapt explanations to different levels of understanding.

For many everyday questions, this is faster than opening multiple webpages and piecing together an answer independently.

But AI systems can be wrong.

An AI may produce information that sounds convincing but is inaccurate, incomplete or outdated — a particularly serious problem when dealing with medical information, financial decisions, legal issues or current events.

A search engine typically provides links to multiple sources, allowing users to assess and compare.

An AI-generated answer may instead present a single synthesised response.

Users must learn a new discipline: do not confuse a confident answer with a verified answer.

Transparency is one of the most important challenges facing AI-powered search. Traditional search engines make it relatively easy to identify the webpages behind a result, but AI systems can summarise information from many sources into a single response without making those

sources equally visible.

AI-powered information systems should make it easier, not harder, to verify important claims because where an answer came from matters just as much as what the answer says.

The potential impact on online publishers is significant.

For years, websites have depended on search engines to drive visitors.

If an AI system answers a question directly, the user may never visit the original website, fundamentally changing the economics of the internet.

Publishers may need to focus increasingly on original research, unique expertise, trusted information and recognisable brands rather than producing large amounts of generic content that AI can synthesise more quickly than any individual website can publish.

The advertising model that traditional search engines built could also face disruption. Instead of displaying ranked sponsored links, AI assistants might recommend options directly within a conversation.

If AI recommends a business, users will reasonably want to know whether that recommendation is based on quality, relevance, paid promotion or some combination, raising important questions about advertising transparency and commercial influence.

Rather than AI replacing search engines entirely, the two technologies are more likely to merge, combining search, AI reasoning, real-time information and personalisation.

A user could ask a question, receive an AI-generated explanation backed by current sources and then explore the underlying information directly, getting the convenience of AI while retaining the verification capabilities that traditional search has always offered.

There is also a broader concern.

If billions of people rely on a small number of AI systems for their daily information needs, those systems become extraordinarily powerful gatekeepers influencing what people learn, which businesses they discover and which perspectives receive attention. The question eventually becomes not only whether AI can replace search engines, but who controls the AI systems through which the world accesses information.

For Zimbabwe and Africa, AI-powered information systems could make information more accessible through simpler explanations, multilingual assistance and translation across African languages.

However, the risk of relying heavily on AI systems trained primarily on information from outside Africa is genuine.

Local knowledge and African perspectives must remain part of the digital information ecosystem if these tools are to serve African communities well.

AI is changing one of the most fundamental activities on the internet.

Traditional search engines helped people navigate the web.

AI could help people understand what they find.

But AI does not eliminate the importance of search, websites or human judgment; it may transform how all three interact.

As AI becomes a major information tool, the ability to critically evaluate AI outputs becomes one of the most important digital skills: verifying important claims, comparing multiple sources and questioning AI-generated answers rather than accepting them at face value.

The biggest change may not be the disappearance of search engines.

It may be the disappearance of the search box as we know it.

In the future, people may no longer think they need to search for something.

They may simply think they need to know it and increasingly turn to an AI system to help them find, understand and evaluate the answer.
