The National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) in Bulawayo is set to launch Sparks, a group exhibition by its 2025 resident artists, on November 20.
The showcase will feature a mix of art forms, including painting, prints, fashion, textiles, handicrafts, and mixed media.
In a statement capturing the essence of the showcase, the gallery said: “We believe every idea, every movement, and every piece of art begins with a spark – something seemingly small but powerful. Sparks is an invitation to connect not just with the artworks, but with the artists’ inner worlds and their shared human experiences. Whether you’re an art lover or someone who’s never stepped foot in a gallery, this exhibition is for you.”
Featuring 11 emerging and established talents, the exhibition will highlight works by Abigail Nyasha Hunda, Bhekisipho Mafohla, Crossland Mbonisi Mehlo, Dumisani Ndlovu, Keith Ryan Chikoza, Mthokozisi Zwelithini Ndlovu, Nothemba Hilda Dube, Picasso Leon Siziba, Ryan Ross Gondo, Talent Kapadza, and Yolanda Ngwenya (Bakhar).
Their collective output explores themes of identity, heritage, and innovation, reflecting Zimbabwe’s contemporary artistic pulse.
The opening event will welcome Cliford Zulu, founder and director of the Centre for Contemporary Arts Bulawayo, as the guest of honour.
Curated by Abigail, Doris Kamupira, and Rinako Shirai (a museology volunteer from Japan), Sparks embraces inclusivity.
“Sparks is an inclusive exhibition that welcomes art lovers and non-art enthusiasts alike. We believe that creativity belongs to everyone, and every individual carries a spark within them.”
Attendees can anticipate an evening of “art, inspiration, and connection,” bridging gaps between creators and the community.
The exhibition aligns with NGZ in Bulawayo’s 55th-anniversary celebrations, running alongside a nostalgic poster exhibition pre-campaign. This dual programming honours the gallery’s legacy while spotlighting new artistic voices.
