Nkayi man jailed for assault after violent beer dispute

A 39-year-old man from Nkayi has been sentenced to 16 months in prison following a conviction of brutally assaulting a 65-year-old man from the same district during a drinking spree.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), eight months of the sentence were wholly suspended on the condition of good behaviour, leaving eight months that he will effectively serve.

Phumuza Ncube, initially charged with attempted murder following a violent altercation with 65-year-old Gilbert Moyo at Mpatshazwa Village, Chief Sikhobokhobo, Nkayi.

“On the 26th of June 2025, the offender and the complainant were drinking beer at the victim’s homestead when the offender became violent after being reprimanded for throwing a tripod cooking stand. He struck the victim on the ribs with a log and pushed him onto the hearth, causing serious burns,” read a statement from NPA.

It was stated that following the matter was reported to the police, leading to Ncube’s arrest.
Moyo was referred to Mbuma Mission Hospital for medical treatment.

“Although the original charge was attempted murder, the court convicted Ncube on the lesser charge of assault, citing mitigating circumstances. Members of the public are warned against resorting to violence in resolving misunderstandings. Such acts have devastating consequences and can easily turn fatal.

We encourage communities to exercise restraint and seek mediation or police assistance where conflicts arise,” read the statement.
