Former TV presenter and media personality Nonhle Thema has sent social media into overdrive after claiming she single-handedly introduced Twitter (now X) to South Africans.
Speaking during a recent sit-down interview on Thando Thabethe’s radio show on 947, the former “O-Access” and “V-Entertainment” star asserted that she brought the platform home to Mzansi after experiencing it in the United States (US), prompting local fans to join in massive numbers just to follow her.
She didn’t stop there. Thema also shared that her family was one of the first Black families to settle in the upscale Johannesburg suburb of Bryanston in 1990. The online reaction was instant, loud and thoroughly divided.
While tech-savvy South Africans quickly fired off receipts showing the platform already had an active local user base before her peak, nobody can deny that Thema was the original blueprint for local celebrity social media culture.
Social media users immediately split into two camps. Many dismissed the claim outright.
@GudGirlLucy1 noted: “She found us there. What does she mean?!” while @Kgothatso… cheekily tweeted about her Bryanston claim, “Oh dear we are peasants before Nonhle.”
Others conceded that her explosive presence was the ultimate catalyst for mainstream adoption.
@ZopioDero pointed out: “Nonhle did have people creating Twitter accounts… to experience her crash-outs in real time.”
Much of the viral chatter also focused on radio host Thabethe, who was widely praised by viewers for keeping her professional poise throughout the bold declarations.

Renting vs owning: Thema took direct aim at peers like Bonang Matheba, Minnie Dlamini and Dineo Ranaka, tweeting: “And I don’t RENT I OWN… properties… PLEASE don’t you dare compare me to them.”
The “call me Jesus” tweet: At her peak chaotic streak, she shocked religious timelines by posting: “I want ALL my smurfs to call me JESUS from now on.”
Hollywood ambition meets Mzansi reality
During her historic run hosting “O-Access” and her reality show “Nonhle Goes to Hollywood”, Thema rubbed shoulders and conducted high-profile interviews with global music and Hollywood icons, including Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Kelly Rowland and 50 Cent.
Perhaps Thema’s mindset was heavily warped by her time in LA, where shouting about your bag is just standard industry practice.
But back home in Mzansi, where the culture demands humility and Ubuntu, her unprovoked chest-paining and aggressive flexing felt like a direct insult.
Black Twitter didn’t just disagree; they immediately started a lifestyle audit on her and initiated the country’s very first mass celebrity drag session.
Long before cancel culture even had a formal name, the timeline gathered Thema so brutally that corporate brands panicked, completely stripping her of her lucrative Dark and Lovely bag and setting the ultimate blueprint for how quickly Mzansi can humble a star.
Today, Thema remains Mzansi’s original “Patient Zero” for cancel culture.
