It was glitz and glamour as people who have excelled in business, sport, art and impacted the Norton community received awards at the WIGATAP Norton Town Awards.
The awards running under the theme: “The Retrospection” looked back at the rich history of Norton Town and the people who have helped it grow through business acumen, prowess in sport and the arts, and service to the people.
Among the recipients was long-serving undertaker Mr Abraham Mamuto, who has served the dead and the living through dedication to duty.
Mr Mamuto won the Outstanding Community Service Award for providing valuable service to the community as an undertaker.
To him, the award was a welcome recognition of the service provided over the past 30 years.
“I can locate all the graves and have helped families that lost their loved ones years back to find their resting place,” said Mr Mamuto.
Mr Josias Nyariwe of Jephcott Auto Recovery won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, where he has grown his company’s recovery services for mining companies and individuals.
An elated Mr Nyariwe said the honour would spur him to do more in showing young people that success was possible, even when one comes from a disadvantaged background.
“This is a welcome recognition of the work we are doing. In winning this award, we encourage people to have a vision, which they will pursue diligently,” he said.
“Our plea is that youth should remain focused on their goals, follow the examples and teachings of President Mnangagwa and Amai Dr Auxillia on shunning drugs for a brighter future.”
In a bid to support fellow youths, his company, Jephcott Auto Recovery, sponsored the Actress of the Year Award, which was won by Wadzanai Dziko.
Principal sponsor of the NOTAS awards, WIGATAP Borehole and Solar Solutions chief executive officer, Mr James Rikonda, said the event, now in its third year, was aimed at celebrating achievers in Norton.
“We are reaching out to everyone who has a connection with Norton to help develop the town. Celebrating achievers is an attempt to encourage healthy competition,” said Mr Rikonda.
Norton mayor Councillor Action Mataruse said Norton was growing and needed to celebrate its heroes to increase the momentum.
