Norton Town Council races to repair refuse trucks amid crisis

The Norton Town Council is working around the clock to ensure that its refuse trucks return to service to ensure regular collection of refuse.

Norton Town Council spokesperson, Mr Leeroy Kaponda, said the local authority had so far managed to have its FAW compactor repaired while the IVECO truck that had developed a mechanical problem is expected to be repaired soon.

“The FAW is back while repairs on the IVECO are almost done, it will possibly be back next week,” he said.

Last month’s full council heard that the council is facing serious challenges in refuse collection amid indications that all its refuse trucks were grounded.

Acting Town Secretary, Mr Blessing Mutyambizi, informed the full council meeting that the only operational truck, an IVECO, had developed a mechanical problem and required assessment before repairs can be carried out.

Mr Mutyambizi stated that the other truck assisting with refuse collection was grounded due to tyre issues.

He also mentioned that the skip truck was due for service. However, the situation on the ground is not pleasing. With the two refuse equipment not yet repaired, Council is failing to collect refuse both in residential and commercial centres.
