A 34-year-old notorious armed robber who had escaped from lawful custody has been rearrested and jailed for 12 years for committing a fresh string of violent crimes while on the run.

David Munikwa, of Chipeta Village under Headman Gororo in Chief Shindi’s area of Chivi, was convicted of multiple armed robbery charges stemming from a series of attacks carried out with three accomplices.

According to a statement from Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, Munikwa was part of a four-man gang that orchestrated a series of robberies targeting homesteads.

The gang, which included Sonboy Pfuwayi, Tawanda Magudu and Masunda, was armed with three pistols when they raided three homes, robbing residents of cash, cellphones, clothing, recharge cards and other valuables.

They were eventually apprehended but Munikwa escaped from police custody before going into hiding.

While on the run, he was implicated in additional robberies, prompting a renewed manhunt. He was later rearrested and brought before the courts.

On June 30, he appeared before magistrate Mrs Judith Zuyu at the Chiredzi Magistrates Court, where he was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Prosecutor Tanyaradzwa Tinago represented the State. Detective Inspector Muteweri commended the public for providing information that led to Munikwa’s capture.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to extend its profound gratitude to members of the public for supplying useful information that led to the arrest of the accused,” he said.

“We are now appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of Reason Pfuwayi, who is still on the run.
