Pedestrian (20) killed in 12th Avenue Extension accident

A 20-year-old man from Binga, Matabeleland North province died on the spot after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing 12th Avenue Extension in Ilanda, Bulawayo, on Monday evening.

In a statement, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the fatal road traffic accident which occurred on February 23 at around 7.30PM.

“Police in Bulawayo confirms receiving a fatal road traffic accident which occurred along 12th Avenue Extension, Ilanda, Bulawayo, where a pedestrian was killed,” she said.

Inspector Msebele said the now-deceased, Anele Mudenda (20) of Mabula Village in Binga, was crossing the road when he was hit by a silver Toyota Corolla driven by a 27-year-old man from Ilanda.

“On the 23rd of February 2026 at around 1930 hours, Anele Mudenda, a male adult aged 20 of Mabula Village, Binga, was crossing 12th Avenue Extension when he was hit by a silver Toyota Corolla being driven by a male adult aged 27 of Ilanda, Bulawayo, travelling along 12th Avenue Extension due west. As a result of the accident, the second party sustained head injuries and died on the spot. His body was conveyed to UBH mortuary,” she said.

Police have since urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads to prevent further loss of life.

“Police urges all the motorists to always exercise extreme caution and keep a proper lookout when driving to avoid loss of lives,” said Inspector Msebele.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are underway.
