PLUMTREE Town councillors on Friday led by example as they spearheaded the National Clean-up programme, an initiative launched by President Mnangagwa in December 2018 to tackle waste management challenges and promote a cleaner, healthier environment across the country.

The National Clean-up Campaign, observed on the first Friday of every month, encourages institutions, communities and individuals to dedicate at least two hours to cleaning their surroundings. Since its inception, the programme has been credited with improving waste disposal habits and strengthening community participation in environmental stewardship.

Friday’s exercise in Plumtree began at 8AM, starting from George Silundika Business Centre and moving towards the town centre. It followed a drug and substance abuse awareness march earlier in the morning, highlighting the interconnectedness of public health, safety and environmental cleanliness.

The clean-up also covered Izimnyama Road, Ingwenya Drive, Barring Road and Dingumuzi Rank. Phakamani High School staff, learners and residents joined the campaign, reflecting growing community commitment to maintaining a clean town.

Ward 5 Councillor Maxwell Washaya said the effort had made a visible difference.
“There are eight councillors from different wards who led today’s exercise. Together with the town secretary, Mr Thembelani Nyoni, we observed that George Silundika Business Centre had more litter than other areas, so we decided to focus on it,” he said.

Clr Washaya said they were joined by Phakamani learners, adding that the clean-up had helped restore the appearance and hygiene of the school’s surroundings and nearby public spaces.
