The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of six people who perished in a tragic head-on collision that occured along the Harare–Masvingo Road on Thursday morning.
The fatal crash, involving a Toyota Corolla and a Mercedes-Benz truck, occurred around 0950 hours at the 246-kilometre peg near Masvingo.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the victims have since been positively identified by their next of kin.
Those who died in the accident are Lilian Maranda-Mujuru (40), Nokutenda Mujuru (15), Makanaka Mujuru (13), Ronald Junior Mujuru (11), Rufaro Shalom Mujuru (7) and Kayden Mujuru (3), all of Tynwald North, Harare.
Commissioner Nyathi said the ZRP extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family following the devastating loss.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police expresses sincere condolences to the Mujuru family and urges motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, particularly during the Easter and Independence holidays,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi also dismissed misleading social media claims linking the accident to law enforcement operations.
“The ZRP has no report or confirmation that this sad accident was caused by Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and Zimbabwe Republic Police teams. Such insinuations should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve,” he said.
Meanwhile, ZACC has also distanced itself from the incident.
In a statement, ZACC Commissioner Mr Kindness Paradza said the Commission is not conducting any roadblock operations.
“The Commission is concerned with a circulating video and audio that wrongly implicates ZACC officers in the tragedy. We reiterate that there are no ZACC officers deployed at any roadblock across the country,” he said.
Mr Paradza said the Commission mourns the loss of the six lives and conveyed condolences to the affected family, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.
Authorities have reiterated calls for vigilance along the country’s roads as traffic accidents tend to increase during holiday periods.
