Police name six victims of Triangle bus-train crash

Police have released the names of six of the nine people who died when a bus collided with a goods train at a railway level crossing in Triangle, Masvingo Province, on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred at around 8:34am along Mbizi Road when a Makuku bus travelling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo crashed into a goods train at a rail-level crossing, leaving nine people dead and at least 26 others injured.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the victims identified by their next of kin are Knowledge Chivava of Village D, Section 64, Triangle; Shepard Shumba (18) of House Number 40, Section 64, Triangle; Maria Hlabwani (40) of Village 3, Nyahombe; Tinashe Mushindi (18) of Section 65, Triangle; Chinguvo Lucia (49) of Mapepa Area; and Learnmore Mutize (2) of Section 63, Triangle.

“The names of the other three victims who perished will be released in due course after identification by their next of kin,” said Comm Nyathi.

He urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe road rules and regulations to safeguard lives.

Following the accident, President Mnangagwa declared the road-rail collision a national disaster, paving the way for Government assistance to affected families and survivors.
