POOL TABLE PAYBACK! Shurugwi man jailed after brutal revenge stabbing at local bar

A NIGHT of pool ended in blood and chaos at a Shurugwi bar after a man launched a revenge attack on a rival he accused of wronging him.

Gabriel Sereva left Morgan Matyande bleeding from multiple stab wounds.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the Shurugwi Magistrates’ Court convicted Severa of attempted murder and sentenced him to five years in prison for the vicious attack.

He carried out the revenge mission on 16 September 2025, around 9PM at Sanganai Bar in Sebanga Extension, Shurugwi.
“The victim, Morgan Matyande, was playing pool when the offender entered the bar holding an empty beer bottle,” the NPAZ said. “He accosted the victim, claiming that he had wronged him previously.”

When Matyande ignored the confrontation and continued with his game, Severa allegedly snapped.
“The offender got incensed and struck the victim on the head with the empty beer bottle,” read the statement. “He then stabbed the victim twice on the neck, once on the chest and once on the left hand with a Columbia knife.”

Bystanders rushed to separate the two. Severa was later arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The NPAZ condemned the violence, warning that bar fights and revenge missions often end in tragedy.
“The NPAZ strongly urges the public to desist from all senseless acts of violence,” the statement read. “Disagreements must be solved amicably through mediation or other peaceful channels. Violence is never the answer and leads only to regret and prosecution.”

The case adds to a growing list of bar-related attacks sweeping mining towns like Shurugwi, often sparked by grudges, jealousy, or intoxication.
