commemorations would be held on August 13 and 14 respectively.
The Heroes Day will be commemorated at the National Heroes Acre while the Defence Forces Day will be held at the National Sports Stadium.
“We’re encouraging people from all walks of life to come and celebrate with us the Heroes and Defence Forces Days,” said Mr Tome, who is also the acting Harare Provincial Governor.
He said 30 buses would be available from the usual pick-up points to ferry people free of charge to the venues over the two days.
Mr Tome said President Mugabe will officiate at both events.
“During the Defence Forces Day, entertainment will be provided by Alick Macheso. In the afternoon, there will be a soccer match pitting a Zimbabwe Defence Forces
Select against a Zambian Defence Forces select,” said Mr Tome.
The match is set to generate a lot of interest from soccer fanatics.
This is considering the fact that the Zimbabwe team will feature players from the in-form Green Buffaloes while the Zambians are set to field some players that helped their national team lift the Africa Cup of Nations.
Last year the Zimbabwean Defence Forces team beat Matchedje, a Mozambican Premier League side, 2-1.
The commemorations in Harare will run concurrently with events in all the country’s 10 provinces with provincial governors officiating and reading the Presidential speech.
Mr Tome appealed to the corporate world and individuals for donations in cash and kind towards the successful hosting of the commemorations by calling his office on 04- 738265.
Meanwhile, the ashes of national hero Cde Kantibhai Gordanbhai Patel will be interred at the National Heroes Acre during the National Heroes’ Day commemorations next month.
Cde Patel died in September last year and his body was cremated at Pioneer Cemetery in Harare.
Director of Urban Communications in the Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity Major Anywhere Mutambudzi yesterday confirmed the development.
“It’s true that Cde Patel’s ashes will be buried on the same day the nation will celebrate National Heroes Day. There will be two programmes, first the burial and then afterwards the people will have the normal heroes day celebrations.
“For more information get in touch with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs,” he said.
Cde Patel fell and broke a hipbone and sustained a fractured skull at his Ridgeview home in Harare on August 25 last year.
