PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has conferred Liberation War Hero status on Cde Harry Macherure, who was the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) chairperson for Mashonaland West Province.
Cde Macherure died on September 5, 2026, and will be buried at the Harare Provincial Heroes Acre at a date yet to be confirmed.
ZNLWVA spokesperson, Cde Cornelius Muoni, said Cde Macherure contributed immensely to the well-being of the country during and after liberation struggle.
Recounting the life of the former freedom fighter, Cde Muoni said; “Cde Macherure was born on 21 November 1960 in South Africa at Medolance Hospital. He attended his primary school at Manzvi Primary School in Chipinge and his secondary school at Kabrit barracks secondary school.
He joined the liberation struggle in 1975 through Mozambique and was trained at Takawira Base 1 and 2 training camps. He was deployed in Manicaland Province Tangwena Sector”.
He was assigned to the security team of the late national hero, Cde Mayor Urimbo and later Cde Dominic Chinenge now Vice President (Retd) General Constantino Chiweng.
Cde Macherure withdrawn from the front to “rear” in Mozambique after being injured in 1979 and was reassigned for further training in Tanzania in 1979 until 1981 when he was attested on November 21, under Military Police Zimbabwe National Army.
He distinguished himself as an astute professional and attained several medals among them during the Mozambican and DRC campaigns.
Cde Macherure continued diligently working for the ruling ZANU PF party in various ranks in Chegutu District, where he rose to become District Coordinating Committee Secretary for war veterans in 2024.
He later became ZNLWA chairperson for Mashonaland West Province in 2024, a position he held until his death.
He survived by his wife, Nyarai, three children and five grandchildren.
