PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived at the site of the ground-breaking ceremony for the ambitious 720MW thermal power plant and 200MW solar project in Hwange. His visit marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to enhance its energy infrastructure and combat ongoing electricity shortages.
Upon arrival, President Mnangagwa was taken for a briefing on the project’s scope and objectives before officially unveiling a plaque to commemorate the ground-breaking. The initiative, led by Titan New Energy in collaboration with Zesa Holdings, represents a substantial investment of approximately US$1 billion and aligns with the country’s National Development Strategy (NDS1) and Vision 2030 goals.
The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2028, with an anticipated annual output of 5.76 GWh, which will greatly alleviate the current power deficits faced by Zimbabwe. By providing a reliable power supply, the project aims to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and position Zimbabwe as a potential electricity exporter.
In addition to enhancing energy security, the project emphasises environmental sustainability through its Waste-To-Energy Power Plant, which aims to achieve zero emissions by reusing waste residues and wastewater. This commitment to green energy solutions is crucial for the country’s transition to more sustainable energy sources.
The ground-breaking ceremony underscores the Government’s dedication to improving the nation’s energy landscape and fostering development through innovative projects. As President Mnangagwa marks this pivotal moment, the project is expected to bring substantial benefits to the local community and the broader economy.
