THE 22-year-old driver of the Honda Fit, which struck and killed Roman Catholic priest Father Regis Chikuni at the intersection of Prince Edward Road and Samora Machel Avenue, is assisting police with investigations.
Tragedy struck on August 29 at around 2.37am.
According to police, Father Chikuni was crossing Prince Edward Road when he was hit by the vehicle, which was being driven southwards by Sean Gamu Makoni (22).
He sustained severe head injuries and fractures to both legs and died at the scene. Police attended the scene shortly after the accident was reported.
His body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Police said Father Chikuni was identified at the mortuary on September 9 by a colleague and fellow priest, Mr Prince Murungweni.
Mr Murungweni subsequently notified the police that Father Chikuni had been missing since August 28 at around 5pm.
Police said Father Chikuni’s next of kin, Ngonidzashe Chikuni, was advised of the identification.
The vehicle was subsequently taken to the Vehicle Inspection Department in Eastlea for inspection.
Makoni is facing a charge of culpable homicide, and police investigations are continuing.
