Government has released $1,8 million to Redcliff Municipality under the Public Service Investment Programme (PSIP) towards the rehabilitation of its water and sewer system and its dilapidated housing units.
The town mayor, Councillor Clayton Masiyatsva, confirmed the development. “We have received $1,8 million fund from Government under the PSIP which we intend to channel towards a number of projects,” he said.
“Key among these projects is the water and sewer reticulation where we will replace old sewer pipes. We also need to use the money to repair the major water pipe line from Kwekwe which has a lot of leakages.
“At least 50 percent of the water from Kwekwe is lost due to leakages on the ageing pipes.”
Clr Masiyatsva said council also intended to use the funds to refurbish some of the council housing units in Torwood. “We have some houses that we refurbished the last time Government gave us such a grant, but the money we received then was not enough to refurbish all the housing units,” she said.
“We have identified some houses in Torwood which we will refurbish this time around using the money.”
Clr Masiyatsva said the money will go a long way in helping the local authority solve is perennial water challenges that have seen some residents in Rutendo suburb going for years without water. Redcliff gets water supplies from Kwekwe City Council and the two local authorities are always at loggerheads over bills. Redcliff owes Kwekwe about $12 million in unpaid water bills.
